In this study, Çanakkale Fish Market records and Çanakkale fisheries production data obtained from Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Province Directorate of Çanakkale were investigated from 1996 to 2001. The highest market records (432.0 ton) and fisheries productions (22 050.6 ton) were observed in 2001. For the years investigated, the sum of the monthly production in the fish market were highest in October and November (183.6 and 183.5 ton, respectively). A total of 65 different marine species were recorded in Çanakkale Fish Market whereas only 25 different marine species were reported by Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Province Directorate of Çanakkale. Although the greatest amount in the Fish Market were gilt sardine, anchovy, and bluefish, the greatest fishing production in the Çanakkale region were reported as gilt sardine, tuna and bluefish. In contrast to the fishing production of Çanakkale region, tuna entered the Fish Market only in August, 2001. Çanakkale Fish Market records and the fishing production of Çanakkale region did not differ only in the amount but also in the species composition. Based on such conflicting statistics, decisions on fisheries management would be erroneous.
