Abstract
Developing technology has introduced new means and methods of warfare in the last
century which caused nouveau environmental concerns. This study aims to analyse the legal
framework of law of armed conflicts in terms of environment and explores the stance of
international law with respect to environmental damages caused by armed conflicts. ENMOD
Convention, Rome Statute, NATO standards on environmental issues and ICJ Advisory
Opinion on the Legality of the Threat or Use of Nuclear Weapons, inter alia, has been
scrutinized. In addition, the paper analyses whether the environment has been sacrificed to the
military advantage of States. In terms of law of armed conflicts, the paper discusses whether
the international legal framework is too loose or firm enough to protect the environment.
Furthermore, the paper focuses on how international law might be shaped to prevent
enormous damage to the environment in the event of armed conflicts.
