The aim of this study was to determine the level of perceptions of the ethical climate of nurses who work in a private hospital and to determine whether ethical climate perceptions differ according to demographic characteristics. Methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study. The study was conducted between July-September 2018 on 154 nurses working at two private hospitals (in Istanbul and Yalova). Research data were collected from nurses working in these hospitals. In data collection, Information Form and Hospital Ethical Climate Scale were used. Results: According to findings, it was determined that the ethical climate perception of the participants was generally positive. In dimensions, ethical climate perception was found most positive in patient dimension, while most negative in physicians dimension. At findings, the perception of ethical climate according to the gender of the participants differed statistically in the managers dimension and perception of ethical climate according to working time in hospital differed in patients dimension(p<0.05). Perception of ethical climate didn’t differed significantly with age, educational and marital status of participants (p>0.05). Conclusions: It was determined that the hospital ethical climate perceptions of the nurses in the study were highly positive, and this perception was influenced by gender and the year of work. The subdimension, where the ethical climate perception was the most negative, was the physician dimension. It’s thought that the results obtained can be a guide in supporting positive ethical behavior.Item Analysis of Knowledge, Beliefs, and Attitudes of Patients in the Emergency Service Toward Rational Drug Use(2021) Can, ŞeydaBACKGROUND/AIMS: Irrational drug use results in the inability to get the expected outcome from the treatment and inappropriate demands of patients stemming from overuse of drugs and drug addiction, and these factors lead to an increased number of applications to health institutions. This study aimed to identify the factors that affect the knowledge, beliefs, and attitudes of patients presenting to the emergency department in terms of rational drug use. MATERIALS and METHODS: This is descriptive cross-sectional research that includes patients who applied for treatment to the emergency department of a state hospital in Turkey between 01.08.2019–31.12.2019. The study sample was composed of 262 patients who agreed to participate in the study. The study used the Rational Drug Use Scale (RDUS) and Drug Use Health Belief Scale (DUHBS) as data collection tools. RESULTS: The mean scores of participants from RDUS (32.37±6.56) and DUHBS (144.37±19.68) were at a good level. A positive and significant relationship was found between RDUS and DUHBS mean score of patients (p <0.01). Knowledge of rational drug use differed according to age, gender, economic status, educational level, and reasons for applying to the emergency department variables (p <0.05), and health beliefs regarding drug use varied according to the gender variable (p <0.01). CONCLUSION: Study results are significant since they revealed the factors that affect the patients’ knowledge of rational drug use and their related health beliefs, as well as the relationship between these factorsItem Comparison of Different Neuromuscular Facilitation Techniques and Conventional Physiotherapy in Knee Osteoarthritis(TURKISH JOURNAL OF MEDICAL SCIENCES, 2021) GÖKŞEN, AYŞENUR; CAN, FİLİZ; YILMAZ, SEVAL; KORKUSUZ, FEZABackground/aim: This study was conducted to compare the effects of conventional physiotherapy and two different ‘proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation’ (PNF) techniques on knee muscle strength, knee muscular endurance, and proprioception in knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Materials and methods: The study included 35 patients between the ages of 47 and 62 who were diagnosed with stage 1-2 KOA. The patients were divided into three groups with block randomization method as Repeated Stretching Group (N = 12) With Repeated Stretching Technique, Combined Isotonic Contraction Group (N = 11) With Combined Isotonic Contractions (CIC) Technique, And Conventional Physiotherapy Group (n = 12). PNF was applied to all patterns of the lower extremity in full pattern and patients in all groups were treated for 6 weeks, 3 days a week. Muscle strength, muscle endurance, and proprioception were evaluated with Biodex System Pro3 (Biodex Corp. Shirley NY, USA). Results: Knee extensor muscle strength showed more improvement at CIC group than the other groups, and CIC group showed more improvement compared to the conventional physiotherapy in terms of knee joint position sensation evaluated at 60° (p < 0.05). Conclusion: All methods were effective in patients with early-stage knee osteoarthritis; however, the most effective results were obtained by PNF using CIC technique.Item Comparison of Median Nerve Mechanosensitivity and Pressure Pain Threshold in Patients With Nonspecific Neck Pain and Asymptomatic Individuals(Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, 2018) Yılmaz, Seval; TAŞ, SERKAN; YILMAZ, ÖZNURObjective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the presence of median nerve mechanosensitivity by comparing median nerve neurodynamic test results of patients with nonspecific neck pain (NNP) and asymptomatic individuals. Methods: A total of 40 patients (30 women, 10 men) with NNP between the ages of 21 and 62 years (39.53 ± 10.18 years) and 38 asymptomatic individuals (23 women, 15 men) between the ages of 18 and 60 years (37.13 ± 9.64 years) participated in the study. Pressure pain threshold was assessed with digital pressure algometer, cervical joint range of motion was assessed with a universal goniometer, and median nerve mechanosensitivity was assessed with Upper Limb Neurodynamic Test 1 (ULNT1). The test step where the first sensory response was given, the location and character of the sensory response, and the final elbow extension angle were recorded during ULNT1. Results: Patients with NNP had significantly decreased pressure pain threshold (P b .001), decreased range of motion of cervical flexion (P b .001), and decreased cervical lateral flexion (P = .001) compared with asymptomatic individuals, whereas no change was identified in range of motion of rotation (P = .100). In ULNT1, 45% of patients with NNP reported pain and 40% of them reported stretch. A total of 65% of asymptomatic individuals reported stretch, and 13% of them reported pain. It was identified in ULNT1 that final elbow extension angle was lower in the NNP group compared with asymptomatic individuals (P = .008). Conclusion: Median nerve mechanosensitivity increased, pressure pain threshold decreased, and active neck motion was limited in indiviItem Covid-19 nedeniyle yaşanan karantina sürecinde yakın ilişkilerde şiddete yönelik tutumun, yaygın anksiyetenin ve etkileyen faktörlerin belirlenmesi(2021-10) Özcan, Şadiye; Yanmış, SafiyeAmaç: Bu araştırma Covid-19 nedeniyle yaşanan karantina sürecinde yakın ilişkilerde şiddete yönelik tutumunun, yaygın anksiyetenin ve bunları etkileyen faktörlerin belirlenmesi amacıyla yapıldı. Katılımcıların %91.6’sı şehir merkezinde yaşadığını, %17.5’i gelirinin olmadığını, %80.5’i kronik bir hastalığının olmadığını belirtti. Katılımcıların %43.8’i salgın nedeniyle ekonomik sıkıntı yaşadığını, %66.9’u sürekli evde kalmanın kendisini zorladığını, %54.3’ü salgın sürecinde aile içi ilişkilerinin etkilendiğini, %44.7’si salgın sürecinde ev içinde tartışma yaşadığını, %26.5’i karantinada tartışmalarının şiddetlendiğini, %44.2’si en çok eşiyle tartışma yaşadığını ifade ettiler. Item Determination of Nursing Students' Perceptions on Stem Cells(2021-10-01) Eren, Handan; Koç, Şerife; Gönültaş, MetinAim: This research was carried out to determine the perceptions of nursing students about stem cells. Method: The research was conducted with 276 nursing students studying at a state university. In the study, data were collected with the Descriptive Characteristics Form and the Stem Cell Perception Scale between February 01 and March 01, 2020. Data were analyzed with descriptive tests, Mann Whitney-U test, One-Way Analysis of Variance, Kruskal Wallis test and multiple lineer regression analysis in SPSS 23 statistical program. Results: The mean age of the students was 19.60±1.26 (min=18, max=25) and 79% were female. The stem cell perception scale mean score of the students is 66.84±6.88, and statistically significant difference was found between the age, the class they attend, their participation in the stem cell-themed scientific program, their knowledge about the cord blood bank and the Stem Cell Perception Scale mean score (p<0.05). Conclusion: Nursing students' perceptions of stem cells were found to be above the average. Since having scientific knowledge about stem cells will positively affect the perception of stem cells, it has been suggested to organize scientific programs related to stem cells in the nursing education curriculum and to increase the course content related to the subject in the education curriculum.Item Do Plantar Pressure and Loading Patterns Vary with Joint Hypermobility in Young Females?(Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association, 2021) TORGUTALP, ŞERİ; BABAYEVA, NAİLA; ÖZKAN, ÖMER; YILMAZ, SEVAL; DÖNMEZ, GÜRHAN; KORKUSUZ, FEZABackground: Joint hypermobility is a connective tissue disorder that increases joint range of motion. Plantar pressure and foot loading patterns may change with joint hypermobility. We aimed to analyze static plantar pressure in young females with and without joint hypermobility. Methods: Joint laxity in 27 young females was assessed cross sectionally using the Beighton and Horan Joint Mobility Index. Participants were divided into the hypermobility (score, 4–9) and no hypermobility (score, 0–3) groups according to their scores. Static plantar pressure and forces were recorded using a pedobarographic mat system. Results: Higher peak pressures (P ¼ .01) and peak pressure gradients (P ¼ .025) were observed in the nondominant foot in the hypermobility group. According to the comparison of dominant and nondominant feet in each group, the hypermobility group showed significantly higher peak pressures (P ¼ .046), peak pressure gradients (P ¼ .041), and total force values (P ¼ .028) in the nondominant foot. Conclusions: The plantar pressure and loading patterns vary in young females with joint hypermobility. Evaluation of plantar loading as an injury prevention tool in individuals with joint hypermobility syndrome can be suggestedItem Does muscle stiffness predict early-onset knee osteoarthritis?(Journal of Surgery and Medicine, 2021) GÖKŞEN, AYŞENUR; CAN, FİLİZ; YILMAZ, SEVALBackground/Aim: The precise evaluation of the surrounding soft tissues and documenting it by clinical measurements are extremely important for detecting early-stage knee osteoarthritis (OA). Shear wave ultrasound elastography is the latest technology that directly measures the mechanical properties of a tissue, including muscle stiffness. This study was planned to investigate the relationship between Rectus Femoris (RF) and Biceps Femoris (BF) muscle stiffness and the relevant symptoms observed in OA. Methods: Thirty-one patients including 21 females and 10 males between 45-67 years of age, diagnosed with early-stage knee OA and 10 healthy individuals were included in this prospective case-control study. Both RF and BF muscle stiffness were evaluated by shear wave elastography (SWE), and the knee range of motion was calculated by a goniometer. The pain intensity was measured by the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), knee function, with the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), and functional performance, using the 6-minute walk test and the step-climbing test. Results: There was a positive correlation between BF muscle stiffness and WOMAC stiffness (P=0.014, r=0.446). There was no difference in Rectus Femoris and Biceps Femoris muscle stiffness between the osteoarthritis patients and healthy individuals (P=0.11 and P=0.10, respectively). Conclusion: It can be concluded that the symptom of stiffness seen in early-stage knee OA is caused by BF muscle spasm related to the flexor reflex.Item Does the primipar adolescent mothers' perception of their baby different from the adult mothers?(2021-06) Özcan, Şadiye; Kırca, NurcanObjective: The aim of this study was to compare between adult and adolescent mothers perceptions of their babies. Materials and methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out with 100 women (50 adult, 50 adolescent) who accepted to participate in the study. The data of the research were collected between March 2019 and February 2020 using the "Personal Information Form" and "Newborn Perception Scale". Results: The average age of adolescent women participating in the study was determined as 18.42 ± 0.70 and 27.30 ± 5.65 for adult women. While 60% of adolescent women live in the nuclear family, 80% of adult women live in the nuclear family. The average marriage age of adolescent women is 17.22 ± 0.70, while the average age of marriage for adult women is 24.62 ± 5.16. Conclusion: Adolescent mothers perceive their baby is more negative than adult mothers. Healthcare professionals should definitely evaluate the communication of adolescent mothers with their babies and their perception of their babies. If this situation is not adequately evaluated and intervened in the adolescent period, it may turn into bigger problems in the years to come and affect the health of both the family and the society. Healthcare professionals should provide more support to adolescent mothers, provide more information and encourage their relatives to support adolescent mothers. Item Effectiveness of Video-Based Exercises on Quality of Life during COVID-19 Pandemic(2021-06) Zengin Alpözgen, Ayşe; Kara Kaya, Begüm; Tiryaki, Pelin; Akşimşek, Gamze Polen; Kısa, Eylül Pınar; Kolbaşı, EsmanurItem Effects of care given in line with Levine’s conservation model on the quality of life of women receiving infertility treatment: A single blind randomized controlled trial(Taylor Francis, 2021-10) Özcan, Şadiye; Kırca, NurcanAlthough infertility is not a life-threatening condition, it decreases the quality of life of people. This single blind randomized controlled trial was conducted with 80 women who received infertility treatment in an IVF Center located in a city center in the west of Turkey between May 2020 and February 2021. It was determined that thanks to the holistic care given in line with Levine’s Conservation Model (LCM), fatigue levels of the women in the experimental group decreased, their energy levels increased, their structural, personal and social integrity was conserved and thus their quality of life improved compared to the women in the control group (all p < 0.001).Item Evaluation of Effectiveness of the Hidden Curriculum in Nursing Students: East Turkey(Unisa, 2021-07) Yanmış, Safiye; Özcan, ŞadiyeThis study was conducted to evaluate the hidden curriculum in nursing education. This cross-sectional, descriptive study was carried out among 235 nursing students. The “Student Information Form” and “Hidden Curriculum Assessment Scale in Nursing Education” were used to collect data from the participants. The mean scores that the students obtained from the hidden curriculum assessment scale, were 138.54±23.27. The variables, such as the faculty the students attended, whether they have chosen the profession willingly (p=0.000), the sufficiency of the professional education of the school (p=0.000), and whether they are happy with the school (p=0.000), affected their perceptions of the hidden curriculum. The students’ perceptions of the hidden curriculum of the institution were at a moderate level. In our study, those who considered the education at the school sufficient, those who chose the nursing profession willingly, and those who were happy with the school, obtained higher scores on the hidden curriculum assessment scale. In order to increase the quality of their graduates, higher education institutions that provide nursing education should aim to create and develop the hidden curriculum of the institution. Thus, the informal hidden curriculum, together with students’ needs and other creative aspects, can be recognised and integrated into the formal curriculum. In addition, interviews can be done with students to identify the factors that are making them unhappy, so that these aspects can be interrogated, in detail, to bring about changes to create a positive school climate.Item Examining the Stress, Coping and Trust Levels of Turkish Healthcare Professionals During the COVID‑19 Pandemic Process(2021) Can, Şeyda; Avçin, EmelThis study was conducted to evaluate Turkish healthcare professionals’ demographic characteristics and the efects of COVID-19 pandemic and stress, coping and trust levels, and to examine the correlation between them. The study has a descriptive and correlational design. The sample of the study included 529 healthcare professionals who volunteered to participate in the study between 01.06.2020 and 31.07.2020 in Turkey. Data were obtained using self-applied online questionnaires. The Perceived Stress Scale and the Trust in Relationships Scale were used to collect the data. The study found a signifcant correlation between the demographic characteristics of the healthcare professionals such as age, marital status and having children, and their perceived stress and coping level (p<0.05). The study found signifcant correlations between the variables of having someone around them diagnosed with COVID-19, contacting with a COVID-19-suspected/positive patient, having a chronic disease, needing psychological support, questioning interpersonal relationships, quality of life and looking to the future with hope/enthusiasm, and healthcare professionals’ perceived stress and coping levels (p<0.05). There was a signifcant correlation between the variables of having a chronic health issue, abiding by the rule of stay at home/social isolation, quality of life and looking to the future with hope/enthusiasm and the Trust in Relationships Scale (p<0.05). Determining the perceived stress, coping and trust levels of Turkish healthcare professionals should be regarded as an opportunity to provide necessary support not only in this pandemic period but after all this end.Item FEELINGS, THOUGHTS AND EXPERIENCES OF HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS WHO RECOVERED AFTER BEING DIAGNOSED WITH COVID-19, A PHENOMENOLOGICAL STUDY(Medicinska naklada, 2021-09) Özcan, Şadiye; Kırca, NurcanBackground: It is very important to protect the physical, mental and social health of healthcare workers who are at risk, are faced with a difficult pandemic process, and have been infected with the disease. In previous studies, the thoughts of healthcare professionals who gave care to coronavirus patients were investigated. The present study is the first study in which experiences and thoughts of healthcare professionals who had coronavirus disease were investigated, and unlike other studies, data were collected through one-to-one, face-to-face interviews. This study was conducted to determine the feelings, thoughts and experiences of healthcare professionals who recovered after being diagnosed with COVID-19. Subjects and methods: This qualitative study was designed based on Husserlian's phenomenological approach. The participants were selected from healthcare professionals receiving COVID-19 treatment through the purposive sampling method. The interviews were held between September 2020 and February 2021. Colaizzi's qualitative analysis method was used. Results: After the analysis of the interviews, three themes and seven sub-themes emerged. The theme "fear" has three subthemes: "fear of the unknown", "fear of being infected again" and "fear of transmitting the disease". The theme “social isolation” has two sub-themes: “Unhappiness” and “stigma”. Finally, the theme "lack of motivation" has two sub-themes: "excessive workload" and "Inadequate number of employees". Conclusions: In order to help healthcare workers manage these psychosocial problems they experience, managers should make appropriate planning and should give them psychosocial support. It is recommended that the criteria regarding healthcare professionals’ starting work again after they survive the COVID-19 should be reviewed and revised. In particular, healthcare workers who survive illness but cannot fully recover should be evaluated physically and psychologically before going back to work.Item Genç Yetişkinlerde Egzersiz Yapma, Sağlıkla İlgili Yaşam Kalitesi ve İlişkili Etmenlerin Araştırılması(14th International Sport Sciences Congress, 2016-11-04) saltan, asumanItem Güncel Bir Bakış İle Squash(Sportif Bakış: Spor ve Eğitim Bilimleri Dergisi, 2021) Yanar, Nazlı; Karakoç, BilalItem Have we been able to improve the conscientious intelligencelevels of nursing students sufficiently?(Wiley, 2021-11) Özcan, Şadiye; Yanmış, SafiyeAbstract Purpose: This study was aimed at comparing the conscientious intelligence levels of nursing students and determining the factors affecting their conscientious intelligence. Of the students, those who chose the profession willingly, those who were women and those who did not perceive nursing as a profession just to earn money obtained higher mean scores in the Conscientious Intelligence Scale. Practice Implications: The results of the study revealed that Nurse Academics should make more attempts to improve students' conscientious intelligence.Item Identifying relationships between kinesiophobia, functional level, mobility, and pain in older adults after surgery(Aging Clinical and Experimental Research/ Springer Nature, 2021) saltan, asumanItem In Vitro Investigation of the Anticancer Activity of Friedelin in Glioblastoma Multiforme(Afyon Kocatepe University Journal of Science and Engineering, 2018-11-28) Emsen, Bugrahan; ASLAN ENGİN, TUBANUR; Turkez, HasanThere are different herbal methods used for support in many cancer diseases. Lichens are important organisms containing unique herbal compounds and it is known that they have different anticancer activities. Starting from these features, the present study was aimed to investigate anticancer activity of friedelin (FRI), a lichen compound against glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) showed dangerous malignant properties within brain cancer species. It was used human U87MG-GBM cancer cell lines and primary rat cerebral cortex (PRCC) non-cancerous cells isolated from Sprague-Dawley rats in order to determine side effect level of FRI. In the experiments, cytotoxic (via 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5- diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) tests), antioxidant (via total antioxidant capacity (TAC) test), pro-oxidant (via total oxidative stress (TOS) test) and genotoxic (via 8- hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG) test) activities of different concentrations of FRI were tested. As a result of the study, MTT assay revealed that FRI showed higher cytotoxic activity on U87MG cells compared to PRCC cells (median inhibitory concentration (IC50): 46.38 and 1271.77 mg/L, respectively). Based on U87MG cells, it was determined a significant positive correlation between LDH and TOS activities. High positive correlation between TAC and cell viability on healthy PRCC cells exhibited antioxidant capacity of FRI. Consequently, the results obtained from the present study proved the potential of natural product with an antioxidant capacity as a source for anticancer compound against GBM.
